Modern Sculpture of Vietnam Who? Where? When? How?
Through The View of Dao Chau Hai

The title of the exhibition ‘To He’, which is also the 8th solo exhibition of artist Le Kinh Tai, inspires my
reflection on the ontological aspect of the artist himself. ‘To he’ (toy figurine) is a traditional toy for
children in Vietnam that is made from glutinous rice powder in form of edible figurine such animals,
flowers or characters in folk stories. ‘To he’ was made and sold mostly on festivals, especially the Tet
(Nula New Year) and the Trung Thu (Mid-Autumn Festival), which are Vietnamese children’s favorites.

Dao Chau Hai Sculptor

During and after the Innovation period, painting has emerged as the main face of Vietnamese art, while
the sculpture suffered from hundreds of disadvantages, even on the international arena. Sculptors could
not sell statues, although monuments could create a bit of work to them, also it brings a lot of whispers
about less valid art and it's the likeness in nationwide. Sculptors have tried to separate business from
composing, as many artists have painted one for sale and other for art, but it was also difficult to
distinguish, and professionalize when doing likes that.

Monuments have been flourishing in nationwide,
but sculpture has been still not working and squirming with innovation to keep up with the world
sculpture. In fact, until the 2000s, Vietnamese sculptors didn't really know much about human
sculpture, the painting situation was not much better, even though they had been taking many the trip
and exhibiting constantly after Innovation and Open period. Contemporary art appears, erases
boundaries, occupies projects and investment, young artist flock into it, it turns out sculpture is also
close to Installation art, so many foreigners comment that Installation art in Vietnam is like a sculptural
presentation.

DAO CHAU HAI, one of Vietnam's leading sculptors after the Doi Moi period (from 1990 onwards), has achieved certain achievements in many different materials and has also experienced different trends, from Realism and Expressionism at his early - influenced by Soviet's sculpture and Russian

Constructivism - to geometric abstraction and conceptual art in his recent creation. In the context of lack of vitality in Vietnam's sculpture, he is a pioneer who has many innovations in welding steel sculpture, inspiring a whole generation of young artists. Visiting him on the occasion of preparing artworks for the exhibition ‘Be Open’ - 30 Years of Fine Art after ‘Doi Moi' in September 2016, we had an open and candid conversation at his studio in Phu Tho province, 80 kilometers from Hanoi.
